Claude skills for trading: what they are and how to install them

Updated 15 October 2026 · 7 min read

A "skill" is a folder of instructions (and optionally scripts) that teaches an AI agent one job, such as preparing an earnings brief or checking a backtest. Here's how they work, where they run and how to install one safely.

What is a Claude skill?

A skill is a folder with a file called SKILL.md. The file starts with a short header containing a name and a description, followed by step-by-step instructions. The folder can also hold scripts, reference notes and templates. The format is an open standard published at agentskills.io, so the same folder can work in several tools.

The agent first sees only each skill's name and description. When your request matches a description, it loads the full instructions. That keeps the agent focused and means you can install many skills without cluttering every chat (OpenAI describes the same "progressive disclosure" model).

Skills that are actually useful for traders

Skills are best for repeatable homework where the steps matter more than an opinion:

Skills are a poor fit for anything that needs live prices you haven't given the agent, and for "what should I buy?" questions. A good trading skill should refuse to answer those.

How to install your first skill

  1. Download a skill folder, for example from the free TapeSkills trader-skills repo (MIT licence).
  2. Read the SKILL.md and any scripts before installing. Anthropic's guidance is to install custom skills only from trusted sources and review what they do (Claude Academy).
  3. Copy the folder into the location for your tool (table above), or zip it and upload it to Claude.
  4. Ask for the task in plain words, e.g. "show NVDA's latest SEC filings". The agent should say it's using the skill.
  5. If it doesn't trigger, call it by name (/sec-filing-finder in Cursor, $sec-filing-finder in Codex).

Free and paid options

Free collections exist on GitHub, for example tradermonty/claude-trading-skills (MIT) and Anthropic's financial-services repo (Apache-2.0), which is aimed at finance professionals. Paid packs are sold on marketplaces and creator stores. Whatever the source, use the safety check above.

Our own: the free Backtest Sanity Checker and SEC Filing Finder, and the Earnings Prep Pack for one-page earnings briefs.

FAQ

Do skills give Claude live market data?

Only if the skill includes a script or tool that fetches it and your environment allows internet access. Otherwise the agent works with what you paste in.

Are Claude skills the same as MCP servers?

No. MCP connects an agent to an outside service (a database, an API). A skill is instructions and files that teach the agent how to do a task. They can work together.

Can a skill trade for me?

A skill could include code that calls a broker API, but that's a big risk. Our skills only read public data and never place orders.
